Cleburne County, Arkansas, population 25,970, is the states 75th and youngest county, formed in 1883 from three existing counties and named for Confederate Army Major General Patrick R. Cleburne. The landscape is rugged and mountainous in the north changing to rolling terrain in the south. Greers Ferry Lake, a reservoir of 40,000 acres, was formed by a hydropower dam of the same name in the early 1960s and created a recreational boom that continues to grow. Tourism is important to the economy, as are cattle and poultry farming and industrial development. The Little Red River provides an excellent fishery for rainbow trout. Fishing, boating, and hunting are important to the county. Cleburne County often hosts fishing tournaments, business meetings, reunions, crafts shows and Saturday night country music.
